Condom Mistakes Common Study Says

“Hope this works…”

A new study recently published in the journal Sexual Health suggests that condoms are often used incorrectly. To reach this surprising conclusion, researchers from the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction at Indiana University had sex with each other for three weeks and when one of them got pregnant they tried to figure out what went wrong. The most common mistake: the male putting the condom on halfway through intercourse.

The study identified an addition 7 common condom mistakes, some perhaps a bit more common than others…

7 Common Condom Mistakes

  1. Using condoms after their expiration date.
  2. Unrolling the condom all by itself, and then, awkwardly, trying to pull it over your penis like a sock.
  3. Neither partner checking to see if there was an actual condom in the condom wrapper.
  4. Failing to roll the condom down all the way to the base of the penis.
  5. Placing the condom on the finger as opposed to the penis.
  6. The male placing the flat condom wafer into his partner’s vagina and simply assuming it will end up on his penis sometime during intercourse.
  7. The male starting with the condom on but then taking it off, engaging in intercourse, and then putting the condom back on for the post-coital pillow talk.

“We chronically underestimate how complicated condom use can be,” said Roger Flacidio of Kentucky University, co-author of the program. “I’m still trying to figure it out myself. Hence my seven kids.”
